Flawed Leadership: Is it Pressure or
Personality?
Webinar: August 12, 2008
2 PM - 3 PM EST
Every Talent Manager is trained to
recognize the positive attributes that identify a high-potential candidate.
However, when the pressure is on, a whole new side of the candidate
emerges. These derailer characteristics are what peers and subordinates
encounter during day-to-day interactions.
If talent management is indeed about building for the future, these
derailers should be at the front and center of related discussion. Ryan
Ross, Director of Alliances and Partners at Hogan Assessment Systems, and
Brandy Agnew, Global Organizational and Talent Development at DELL will
discuss trends in proactively identifying candidate derailers prior to
placement in a high-potential program, best practices to minimize their
effect on performance, and preventing derailment by focusing on correct
placement and promotion strategy.
With the shrinking talent pool, expanded responsibilities of leaders, and
the intense pressure being placed on leaders, the impact of flawed
leadership attributes has become a central focus across organizations.

The Conference Board Webcast featuring Dr. Robert
Hogan
Assessing Leadership Derailment Behaviors
Webcast: July 17, 2008
2 PM - 3:30 PM EST
"Leadership derailment" by
definition means behaviors that cause leaders to overestimate their own
abilities, lose sight of how their actions impact others, and alienate
peers and subordinates. This webcast will feature an historical overview of
the concept of derailment, a review of available assessment instruments and
case studies detailing how organizations have incorporated derailment
assessments into their talent management process. As a participant
pre-registering for this webcast, you will have the opportunity to complete
an assessment that measures derailment characteristics, receive a copy of
the data and review your assessment report in a follow-up phone call with
an outside consultant if you so desire.
This webcast will discuss:
• The history surrounding leadership derailment behaviors — early research,
development of a taxonomy of derailment,
and ways of assessing derailment.
• Specific tools to measure derailment tendencies and ways of profiling an
organization's culture to determine which derailment behaviors carry the
most weight in a given corporate culture.
• Ways organizations use and integrate information on derailment in the
talent management process including development planning initiatives.

Management Derailment
Personality Assessment and Mitigation
The base rate of managerial
incompetence is about fifty percent, and every competent study of
managerial failure points to overriding personality defects as the key
issue. These personality derailers undermine a leader's ability to build
and maintain a high functioning team.
Bad management can be minimized through
selection, development, and managing job transitions carefully. If
organizations observe the principles of good management, including how they
manage their managers, then they are more profitable. When organizations
ignore the principles of good management, they are less profitable, and
they subject their employees to unnecessary stress and abuse.

Every leader has personality characteristics that threaten his or her
success. The Hogan Development Survey is the only business-related
inventory that measures performance risks that impede work relationships,
hinder productivity and limit overall career potential. The HDS provides
valuable feedback for strategic self-awareness, which is key to overcoming
these tendencies and achieving success in the workplace.
